Black Duck by Janet Taylor Lisle
During the time of prohibition Ruben and his best friend Jeddy find a dead man in a suit washed up on shore. They are certain he must be connected to the illegal alcohol trade in their area but by the time they come back with the police, the body is gone. The boys know what they saw but after Jeddy talks to his dad, the chief of police, he stops talking to Ruben and their relationship is strained. Ruben, meanwhile, begins to become involved with the captain of the Black Duck, a famous local rum-running boat. The Black Duck undertakes more and more dangerous jobs until the night when one member of the crew is shot. Was it an accident or did someone murder the crew member?
