Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata
During the Vietnam war dogs were trained to help our troops by detecting trip wires or hidden soldiers. This book tells the story of Cracker, a german shepherd who forges a friendship with Rick, a young soldier determined to take on the world. Told partly from Cracker's point of view the story travels from the fort where Cracker and Rick train to the camp in Vietnam where they are stationed. Some of Cracker and Rick's other friends - dog and human - travel with them and they are all deployed on various missions during the war. During this era, however, the military viewed their dogs as just another piece of equipment and when the war ended the dogs were often not brought back home. Cracker! presents a realistic picture of the war with an appealing canine perspective.
