The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

After an uprising the United States is divided up into 12 regions. As punishment for the uprising each year each district must choose a boy and a girl to participate in the Hunger Games, a battle to the death. Katniss has been lucky so far but her younger sister's name is drawn on the first year she is eligible so Kat volunteers to take her place. To make matters worse, Kat's district has always been underdogs in the Games since other districts train their fighters from early ages. But Kat's handlers have some different ideas about how to present her and Peeta, the boy from her district, that might give them a better chance than ever before. But even if the two of them can beat the other 22 contestants, there can only be one winner for the Hunger Games...
