Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel
Ben has been an only child his entire life. But when he turns 13 his parents bring home a baby chimpanzee named Zan. Ben's parents are scientists who plan to teach Zan sign language to see if he is able to communicate with humans. They tell Ben that Zan is now part of the family and Ben feels like Zan is his younger brother. Inspired by his parents, Ben decides to start "Project Jennifer" to try to get the girl of his dreams at school. Both experiments seem to be working - before long Zan knows 66 words and is starting to form sentences and Jennifer kisses Ben at a party. But as Zan grows older he starts exhibiting more chimp-like behavior and it might not be possible for the family to keep him. Ben is heartbroken at the prospect of losing his little brother and even more upset by the fact that his father doesn't seem to care at all.
