A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

If you think you know the story of Hansel and Gretel you are probably mistaken. The original stories told by the brothers Grimm were violent, dark - and AWESOME! This book takes many original fairy tales and weaves them together with added parts from the author. After being beheaded by their parents (but then magically healed) Hansel and Gretel decide to leave home to find a nicer family. But along the way they encounter increasingly bad parents and some awful characters including a witch, a dragon and even the devil himself. The brother and sister continue their search but begin to realize that it might be up to them to save themselves rather than relying on any adult to do so. This is a wonderful, unique story full of both danger and humor.
