Down the Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams
Ingrid is a great soccer player, has a busy family, is not so good at algebra, and wants to get the lead role in the production of Alice in Wonderland. While coming home from soccer practice one day she gets lost and ends up at Cracked-up Katie's house. Ingrid finds that Katie is not as crazy as everyone thinks and the two are getting along fine until she mentions the local theater group. Katie's face changes and she forces Ingrid out the door. Later that night Katie is murdered and Ingrid realizes that she has left her cleats, labeled with her name, in Katie's house. After breaking in to retrieve her cleats Ingrid finds some clues that make her certain the police have the wrong men in prison for Katie's murder. But by now she's in too deep. Ingrid keeps investigating the murder unaware that the actual killer is closer than she thinks.
