Gated by Amy Christine Parker
Lyla has lived with her family in the Community for several years. They were chosen by Pioneer, the spiritual leader of the Community to be among the few who will be saved when the world ends. Lyla has always been very happy with her life and with the boy Pioneer has chosen to be her husband but when she is asked to distract an outsider, Cody, she begins to question Pioneer's plans. Her questioning becomes stronger when Pioneer tells them that they will be entering their underground compound sooner than expected and Lyla observes some disturbing things being done to help them prepare. I found this book disturbing which surprised me especially since there were no problems with bad language or sexual content. I believe it was the quotes at the beginning of each chapter that gave me pause. The first several chapters were started by quotes from fictional leader Pioneer but then the quotes began to be from real cult leaders such as Charles Manson and Jim Jones. I think that it's a story that teens will find very interesting and will provide a lot of discussion material, especially since they will most likely not be familiar with the real life examples.
