The Saturday Boy by David Fleming

Derek's dad is in Afghanistan and Derek misses him terribly even though they write regularly.  Derek keeps all of his dad's letters in an old lunch box and reads them over and over.  Derek has a knack for getting into trouble at school by often being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  His school life is further complicated by Budgie, his former best friend who now bullies Derek.  Even more perplexing is that Budgie is still a good friend to Derek when they are together with no one else around.  One day Derek sees his dad on the news and his worst nightmare comes true.  The author has written an extremely believable ten year old boy in how he deals with issues at home and school.  Derek is both seemingly unaffected by some things but then feels other things deeply.
